The Nilometer on Roda Island in Cairo is an ancient structure built in 861 AD during the Abbasid era under Caliph Al-Mutawakkil. It was designed by the famous astronomer Al-Fargani to measure the Nile’s water level and predict floods, which determined agriculture and taxation in Egypt. The structure features a deep well with a central marble column marked with cubits. Today, it stands as a unique historical monument reflecting Egypt’s dependence on the Nile.
