The prison at the Cairo Citadel (often referred to as "the Citadel Prison" or "Tower Prison") is a former military prison comprised of around 40 cells arranged in two rows separated by an open corridor. The oldest section dates from Khedive Ismail’s era and was completed in 1882. It was used to detain military prisoners and political detainees during various periods. The prison was closed in 1984 and later turned into part of the museum/exhibition sections of the Citadel complex.
