The House of Ali Effendi Labib, located in Haret Darb El-Labbana (Darb El Ahmar), Cairo, was built by the merchant Malatily brothers, Sharif Omar and Ibrahim el-Malatily, in the late 18th century. It later became known by its overseer, Ali Effendi Labib. The house is a fine example of Ottoman-era residential architecture with strong traditional Islamic interiors: two small courtyards, mashrabiyyas (wooden latticed windows), ornate portals, balconies, and antique columns. It has been known as “Maison des Arts” because many artists lived and worked there in the 20th century, including Muhammad Nagy, Beppi Martin, and Hassan Fathy.
