Founded by Sultan al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub in 1242–1243 CE, this is Egypt’s first institution to teach the four Sunni madhhabs. His widow Shajar al-Durr added a mausoleum in 1249–1250 CE. Located on al-Muizz Street in Islamic Cairo, its surviving features include the ornate facade, the Ayyubid-era minaret, and parts of the western iwan.
