This monastery, carved into the Mokattam hills in Cairo, honours Saint Simon the Tanner (10th century), known for the legend of moving the Mokattam Mountain during Fatimid times. It contains a large cave church capacity ~20,000 people, plus several chapels and halls carved from rock. Interior walls are decorated with biblical carvings by a Polish artist. It’s also central to the community of Zabbaleen who live at the mountain’s base.
